Die Menge der Dinge / The Amount of Things (2020–2027)

"DMDD" is a teaching and artistic research project developed at the Department of Scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna by Otto Krause and Jasmin Hammer. It is structured in several phases and uses the inventory of clothing as a method to explore materiality, identity, and consumption. A key strength is its interdisciplinary and experimental approach, which combines documentation, visual analysis, and performative practice while promoting self-organized and peer-based learning.
The first phase (2020–2021) focused on documenting students’ wardrobes, resulting in a 900-page book combining scientific documentation and artistic reflection. In 2022, the project expanded into a public exhibition at Exhibit Eschenbachgasse, featuring participatory “inventory conversations.”
Since 2024, the project has developed internationally through a Blended Intensive Programme with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and the Estonian Academy of Arts, culminating in a public performance at Prospekthof. The development has been strongly supported by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna through funding and infrastructure. The next phase (2027) will continue in Antwerp with additional partners, including Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.
